Casa Girasoles Cycling Team

The long term goal is to get one or more of the boys on the podium at the 2027 Pan American Games in Lima. Their performances suggest they could one day represent Peru on the national team—or even compete professionally on the global stage.

Hugh, Kevin, and Wayne at HBI put together a gravel camp in Peru where people can ride with the kids and train at altitude with breathtaking views and hit Machu Picchu as a side trip.

Gravel camp is a great way to raise money for HBI and the Casa Girasoles orphanage, while you experience the trip of a lifetime.

They are doing Gravel Camp again this year, as well as an adventure running camp.
Edwin's firt pro MTB race win and Casa Girasoles cycling team member also took 4th 2/22/2025 - on bicycles bought by Mike Colbach and part of the BicycleAttorney.com scholaraship (post on HBI).

I am sponsoring Edwin's racing efforts this year in the hopes that he can go pro full time.

Read more about the team and BicycleAttorney.com Mike, Kevin and Hugh's efforts on Causes I Support and Kevin and Hugh's 2022 trip delivering 20 brand new bikes for the team, and staying for a month to ride and work with the boys teaching mechanic, bike fitting skills, and tune ups on their fleet of bikes for all the boys of different ages.

Thanks to a scholarship from BicycleAttorney.com, a Portland, Oregon-based organization, these young athletes are discovering their love for cycling and unlocking opportunities that could change their lives forever.

The cycling program at Casa Girasoles is more than just a sports initiative. It's a pathway to hope, a testament to resilience, and a celebration of camaraderie. With the financial support from BicycleAttorney, the team has been able to participate in races across the Cusco region, showcasing their talents and proving that success is within reach, no matter where you come from.

Competing in their first official race, two boys delivered incredible performances in the open category—a race that included seasoned professionals. One boy crossed the finish line in first place, while another secured an impressive fourth. These results are not just victories on the racecourse; they are symbols of the potential within these young athletes, many of whom have overcome significant challenges to be where they are today.

Among the team are a couple of boys whose talent is undeniable. Their performances suggest they could one day represent Peru on the national team—or even compete professionally on the global stage. But beyond the medals and accolades, the cycling program is about something much deeper.

The project aims to inspire all the boys at Casa Girasoles to see a pathway to success. Cycling is the vehicle, but the destination is far greater: resilience, self-confidence, and a sense of belonging. These boys are learning important life lessons through the discipline of training, the thrill of competition, and the bonds forged on the road. They're discovering that hard work pays off, they can overcome obstacles, and they can achieve greatness—both on and off the bike.

What a great year.

CX in the Fall finished out the year with a huge blast of fun and team achievments.

We saw Ian Baker dominate the Category 3 scene, snagging five top-three finishes, including a 1st Place at the Cross Crusade McMenamins Edgefield and another 1st Place at the PIR Coyote Run #2. Not to be outdone, Amy Solana had a powerhouse season, taking five top-three spots in the Masters 35+ Women's races, including two 1st Place victories at the Cascade Locks and PIR Coyote Run #2 events.

The Masters categories were on fire, with Scott Bradway consistently on the podium with four top-three placements, highlighted by a 1st Place at the Cross Crusade—Cascade Locks. In the women's masters field, Margi Bradway secured three top-three finishes, including a 2nd Place at Harvest CX's Zaaldercross. Even our younger riders shone brightly, with Logan Trost locking down a 3rd Place at the Cascade Locks. The consistent podium appearances from riders like Angharad Porteous (three top-three finishes) and Shannon Boroff (two top-three finishes, including a 1st Place) truly demonstrate the depth of our talent.

Thanks for all the amazing photography work on such a grand scenic bicycle race especially shooting great photos in the EPIC weather conditions which Mudslinger cited as, "top ten toughest event we have produced." Photographers should win awards, long day and a lot of weather endured. Looking through his photo gallery, you can see the heavy rain downpour, the mud coated cyclists (and photographer on the other side?) and yet, most of cyclists are all still smiling :-) unless they are busy wiping mud off their glasses/goggles/eyes!
